Our Jess becomes Board Member of Power to Change Trust

We are proud as punch that Jess has been appointed to the Board of the Power to Change Trust, one of the most important funders of Community Businesses in the country. Power to Change are an independent charitable trust that supports and develops community business in England. Their aim is to create better places through community business.

Community Business is defined as any business that is accountable to their community and that the profits that they generate deliver positive local impact.

Jess says:

“I joined the Power to Change Board because I want to change the world, and I think community business can do that. Community Business recognises that people care about much more than money. Good business sense matters but it can be adapted to social good as much as commerical gain. Having set up and run several community businesses myself I have a keen understanding of what it is really like on the ground, which can often be not quite how funders see it. I hope that a bit of my real-world experience will help to bring a different perspective to the board.”

Jess, who grew up at Tropiquaria zoo in West Somerset, has established, run and supported many social enterprises and community businesses and is Director of Onion Collective, an ambitious mission-led community regeneration company that also provides in-depth support and guidance to others in the social enterprise and community business sector.

Jess studied at Oxford University, and then afterwards became a social researcher working for the Government and then at an independent think tank in Westminster. She was one of the team behind the £3m Minehead Eye youth centre skate park in Minehead, for which she remains Director. Jess was instrumental in the establishment of Contains Art, artist studios and exhibition space in shipping containers in Watchet and she now works half of the week in London for a leading economic consultancy. Jess was a West Somerset District Councillor between 2005 and 2007 and is passionate about improving opportunities in West Somerset and in her hometown of Watchet.

Well done Jess. We are all so proud of you we could burst!
