Invitation to the launch of the West Somerset Community Land Trust with a talk by architect and broadcaster Piers Taylor

October 19, 2016

Architect and broadcaster Piers Taylor will be speaking at the launch of the West Somerset Community Land Trust in an event that takes place on Tuesday 1st November 2016 at 7pm at the Beach Hotel, Minehead.

The WS Community Land Trust is a new organization which is exploring future housing in West Somerset and is working to provide community owned and controlled affordable housing in West Somerset. With the evocative title ‘Home – where are we all going to live?’  the event will explore this question, seeking answers which are affordable and appropriate for West Somerset.

The event will be an opportunity to find out about the West Somerset Community Land Trust, what they want to change and why, with an interactive session giving participants a chance to have their say as well as a question and answer session.

The event begins at 7pm, refreshments will be available and people attending the event are invited to also bring a dish of food to share if they wish.

Onion Collective CIC are proud to be working with the WSCLT, supporting them in community engagement work to ensure that there is a solid understanding of the real housing needs of people in West Somerset.  WSCLT is working to provide homes that are genuinely affordable based on local wages not national averages.  The organisation will be community controlled and any homes built or renovated will be owned for the benefit of the community to meet the needs and requirements of the community.

Founding Board Member Maureen Smith said:

“It is expected that 2900 homes will be needed between now and 2032 in West Somerset and that 60% of them will need to be affordable. With such low incomes in the area ‘affordable’ is a not a lot of money and the usual guide is that spending more than 30% of family income on housing means the resident is in the wrong accommodation. Housing need is not just being ‘on the street’. Overcrowding, living too far from work and/or family, substandard conditions, lack of facilities and problems caused by disability are all involved as well as rent or mortgage being too high. Short term tenancies or difficulty paying the mortgage can cause insecurity and lead to family and health problems. We believe that housing is healthcare!”

WSCLT has received initial start-up funding from Forum 21, Somerset Community Foundation and the National CLT Network. For more information see our website www.wsclt.com or contact Maureen Smith on 01643 709478 or find the event on Facebook here
