Creating a stronger future for Watchet

The Onion Collective is pleased to announce that we have been awarded £79,000 from the Social Investment Business (SIB) in order to investigate the most sustainable way to develop key areas in Watchet, including the East Quay area and the Youth Club site.

Our work will determine what business model can best deliver maximum community benefit; with financial viability and long-term sustainability key facets in establishing the right business model for these sites.

Extensive community consultation to determine what local residents wanted for Watchet was carried out in 2008, and resulted in the report Watchet 2025. The Onion Collective will carry out further consultation to check whether those needs are still valid and still represent the needs and desires of local people. First round consultations with key stakeholders will be carried out over the next 6 months, the results of which will inform the direction of any proposed business model.

The aim is that by Autumn/Winter 2014 we will have a proposed business model to move Watchet forward; fully supported by architectural plans, full budgets etc and ready to form the basis of an application for a capital project funding bid. Funding to pay for the actual development of the project could then be applied for. Without the business model in place Watchet would not be able to submit viable applications to the scale needed to develop these sites.

We will keep everyone informed of the progression of the study through our website and social media, so keep in touch and follow us on Twitter @onioncollective and on Facebook.
