New bikes for local group

A community mountain biking group, established by Watchet and Williton Children Centres was successful in getting funding from the Quantock Hills Sustainable Development Fund (SDF) for new bikes.

Some of their original bikes were starting to show their age and the group decided to apply to the SDF for money to buy some new hardtail mountain bikes.

Rachel Kelly, OC director, one of the mums and a group regular said:

"Without Pompy's Cycles help by offering a generous discount we would not have been successful in getting the bikes. It's great to be part of a biking group and Dave Fahey, our cycle leader, teaches us all the basics on our rides - and we get fitter whilst meeting other locals whilst out enjoying our fabulous hills. I've made some life-long friends through the biking group. Something about getting exhausted, wet and muddy together really creates a bond!"

The group has now set up a facebook page ‘Quantock MTB' and everyone is free to join. You don't have to be using the Children Centre but places on the guided rides can be booked via Family support officer Tracey Bland on 01643 700 030 or ask for more info via the facebook page. The group has spaces for more riders at the moment and is open to all members of the local community, not just mums and dads, and are looking at potentially offering new sessions such as map reading, bike maintenance and how to ride responsibly.

The group currently meets at North Hill, Minehead on a Monday and at Staple Plain, West Quantoxhead on a Tuesday.
