East Quay demonstrates that communities can reimagine a future full of hope, opportunity and joy.  It is a social enterprise, a space where culture, creativity, and imagination is celebrated together.

East Quay is designed by Invisible Studio and Ellis Williams Architects, landscape architects LT Studio, and engineers Momentum.  With Troup Bywaters + Anders as Mechanical and Electrical consultants for the project, and South West based Midas Group Ltd as the lead contractor.

East Quay will open in summer 2021.

The layout of East Quay sits on four floors which includes the top level of the accommodation pods. Here are the plans of the main public access spaces for details and navigation.

Studios and tenants

Contains Art are a not-for-profit social enterprise who believe that who you are, what you have and where you live should not restrict your opportunities to see, take part in and create some of the best art in the world. Contains Art will run the programme for the gallery and education space, showing exhibitions and running courses and workshops that demonstrate how art is a powerful force for change.

Albatross Print Studio is a new venture for artist-printmakers Sue Lowe and Sarah Ward. Albatross aims to advance and celebrate fine art printmaking. High quality artists’ original prints will be available to view and purchase, with opportunities to see and learn about the processes and skills used in their making. The studio plans to offer courses and workshops for all levels of ability and experience and to offer resources to professional printmakers through a membership scheme.  Albatross is currently seeking one or two artists to share our new studio. Find out more.

Two Rivers Paper craft hand-made beautiful rag papers for artists and designers.  Two Rivers is dedicated to maintaining the English tradition of making the finest hand-made watercolour paper for artists.

Geckoella is a specialist consultancy covering geology, ecology and heritage. East Quay will house their exciting new geology workshop and rock room where they will cut and analyse rocks and minerals and carry out fossil preparation. Geckoella promises that from time to time there will also be a few big fossil surprises for everyone to see and enjoy.

The studios and workshops are tenanted spaces, where people in the creative industries can lease space to work.  They are intended for fine artists and practical makers of any sort. The studios will be advertised from February.

East Quay will have a full programme of exhibitions, events, workshops, courses and activities for children and adults all year around.  During the school holidays there will be an activity every day.

Job vacancies and careers

The building will provide a whole range of roles within the kitchen, gallery, and reception, as well as positions in cleaning and caretaking, marketing, and education.  Keep a look out on our social media and here for new vacancies.

Accommodation pods

East Quay will house five idiosyncratic and ingenious pods to stay in. The pods are aimed at the more adventurous traveller looking for an immersive short-stay experience.

There will be a limited amount of parking for the studio and workspace tenants on site, and visitors will need to park in one of the public car parks in Watchet.  We are hopeful of plans for further parking at the old paper mill site.

There are multiple access points to the site, and easy access is an important factor. There is lift access to three of the four floors. Access to the first-floor walkways can also be found from the railway line side, along the footpath that leads to Splash Point.
